Elite 12 Hour Protein is designed to be the ultimate muscle fuel and workout recovery formula. Knowing that protein repairs muscle after the workout and fuels the body throughout the day, Dymatize wanted to develop a product that took recovery to the next level, one that would revolutionize the protein category.

After a battery of tests and trials, we were able to develop a calculated protein timing system that we call Sustained Muscle Saturation Technology (SMST). SMST utilizes a multi-source blend of the highest quality proteins, a digestive enzyme matrix and our proprietary lipid formula to achieve its goal: up to 12-hour muscle fueling and recovery with maximum nitrogen retention for maximum muscle growth.

How does SMST work?
Different proteins have different chemical compositions and different rates at which they can be assimilated by the body. By developing an absorption "time-line" of the highest quality proteins, we were able to create the basis of the 12-hour formula. We added a digestive enzyme matrix to more efficiently aid in the digestion and absorption of proteins, as well as a lipid blend that specifically promotes a longer absorption rate of the proteins allowing for a complete anabolic, nitrogen rich environment to be sustained in the body.

To determine this unique combination of proteins, every facet of protein usage had to be analyzed.
Nitrogen retention and absorption is a combination of several different factors and each source of protein has its own results that were studied to develop the advanced protein blend found in

Dymatize 12 Hour Protein. These factors included:

Rate of Absorption (RA), the rate at which each protein source releases its amino acids. Each protein source has its own release rate.
Protein Digestibility Correct Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS). This is a fairly recent evaluation method adopted by the FDA and FAO/WHO in 1993. This "best method" utilizes nitrogen absorption as well as amino acid profile as its basis of quality.
Amino Acid Profile each protein source has its own unique amino acid profile.
Biological Value (BV) is derived from the amount of Nitrogen absorbed over the amount of Nitrogen incorporated into the body. This formula gives each protein source is BV. This value is used to help determine the amount of protein absorbed from different protein sources.
Net Protein Utilization (NPU) was used to determine the ideal amount of essential amino acids.
Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) - similar to PDCAAS.
This analysis led us to believe that no single existing natural protein source was ideal for utilizing these desired extended release anabolic effects. Dymatize has determined the optimal source is a fusion of several different protein sources, including free form branch chain amino acids and other free form amino acids. Whey protein is the overall "winner" as far as single source values were concerned. Whey has the highest BV of any natural protein source and has the highest rating of PDCAAS.
